Pune's Tanay Manjrekar becomes first Indian to ride hyperloop

The first manned test of high-speed pod system by Virgin Hyperloop was completed successfully at Las Vegas centre in the US. India's Tanay Manjrekar was among two persons who travelled through this hyperloop. He has been working on the Hyperloop project since 2016.

Pune: Hyperloop that is considered as a vehicle of extreme speed in future was recently tested successfully in the US with two manned test rides. Amongst them was India's Tanay Manjrekar who got this opportunity to be a part of loop pod experiment.

Hailing from Pune, Maharashtra, Tanay Manjrekar works as a power electronics expert at Virgin Hyperloop and his participation in the test ride was a pleasant surprise for all Indians.

First manned test of the high-speed pod was performed at Las Vegas center in the US by Virgin Hyperloop on Sunday, while the second test was performed on Monday.

Tanay Manjrekar participated in the second test.

Talking to media, Tanay said, "working on the Hyperloop project and being the first to travel through it is a dream come true for me."

Tanay has obtained a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from Savitribai Phule Pune University and he is employed in Virgin Hyperloop since 2016.

400 unmanned tests so far

Nearly 400 unmanned test rides of Virgin Hyperloop have been conducted so far and the whole world was looking forward to this first manned test ride eagerly.

Hyperloop technology officer Josh Gegal and director Sara Lucian participated in the first test while, in the second test, other officers of Hyperloop got the opportunity to travel along with Tanay.

Hyperloop CEO J. Walder said that the success of both tests ratified Hyperloop’s capacity as well as safety. The vehicle used for the test had the capacity of two persons while the commercial vehicle will be bigger in size and capacity of 28 seats.

Hyperloop in Maharashtra

The government under the leadership of former chief minister Devendra Fadanvis had recognized Pune-Mumbai Hyperloop as an infrastructure project.

Hyperloop-DP World Consortium has been recognized as original project proponent. This is a modern transport project connecting two metro cities Pune and Mumbai by Hyperloop (vacuum cavity). Pune-Mumbai Hyperloop project has been undertaken by Pune Mahanagar Area Development Authority and it is the first of its kind in the country.
