Mumbai: Even as several state governments have suspended vaccination for COVID-19 due to an acute shortage of jabs, cases of non-availability of drugs required in treating Mucormycosis are coming to the fore.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection. Several individuals who recovered from COVID-19 are increasingly getting infected with this fungus.

In one such case, police sub-inspector Bhaidas Mali got tested positive for COVID-19, not once but twice. Though he recovered from the deadly viral infection both times, he soon suffered from Mucormycosis.

The total expenditure incurred in his treatment is around Rs 40 lakh. Though his family did not have enough resources to fund his medical expenses, his batchmates and friends raised campaigns and accumulated Rs 30 lakh in the first phase and another Rs 10 lakh later on. However, as Mali continues to battle for his life, the hospital authorities have now expressed their helplessness as they have run out of crucial drugs required in treating Mucormycosis.
