Neemuch: Inspired by Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Padman', a 37-year-old resident of Khor village here has set up a sanitary pad manufacturing unit, employing 15 women from the area.

In a bid to educate women in his village about menstrual hygiene and provide cheap sanitary pads, Bhupendra Khoiwal has set up a manufacturing unit in Khor village, 15 km from the district headquarters in Madhya Pradesh.

"My family supported my idea and provided financial help for setting up a production unit, which I named after my daughter Aishwarya," Khoiwal told ETV Bharat on Thursday.

Aishwarya Enterprises was set up six months ago with an investment of Rs 3.5 lakh, he said.

However, convincing women to work with him was an uphill task, and Khoiwal managed to get just 15 on board.

"These pads are economical and a packet of eight pads costs Rs 20," he said, adding that the cost of similar products in the market is Rs 40 per packet.

Apart from selling these pads door to door in surrounding villages, his women staffers also raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, Khoiwal said.

Khoiwal, who has supplied nearly 50,000 pads to vendors in Bhopal, now plans to expand the facility, one of his associates said.

Neemuch district panchayat's chief executive officer Bhavya Mittal has assured her support for this initiative.

Only a small percentage of women in India are aware of menstrual hygiene and have access to sanitary pads. Most women in rural areas tend to employ unhygienic methods of protection that can cause serious health risks.

From Reel to Real: MP man turns 'padman' to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene

Neemuch: "A man has no right to be called a man if he can't protect a woman," the dialogues of Akshay Kumar's movie inspired a guy from Madhya Pradesh so much that he himself decided to become 'Padman'.

Bhupendra Khoiwal, a resident of Khor village in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh was so emboldened by the superstar that he set up a sanitary pad production unit in his village on his own.

The unit not only manufactures economical pads but provides employment and educate women. Howbeit, it was not a piece of cake to get women to work on the venture, Bhupendra managed to convince 15 women to support the idea in the start. The number started to grow as awareness on the topic grew among the ladies. Bhupendra revealed that just like Arunachalam Muruganantham, his journey was troublesome. "When I told my family about the idea, they fiercely opposed it," he said.

"Good intentions and hard work always yield results" and that is what happened with Madhya Pradesh's very own 'Padman' whose family eventually agreed to support his noble idea. Bhupendra's company Aishwarya Enterprises, named after his daughter has manufactured about 75,000 pads and delivered them to the entire state including the capital Bhopal. These pads are not sold in medical or general stores, instead, the women staff go from house to house to sell these and simultaneously educate women about the advantages of sanitary pads and caution them about the health hazards of using cloth during mensuration.

Aishwarya Enterprises manufactures and sells economical pads for Rs 2 each. The cost price of which is Rs 1.80 thereby only leaving a profit margin of 20 paise. The initiative is not only bringing awareness in a backward district like Neemuch but is making women self-independent thereby propagating women empowerment.

Khoiwal could have launched any line of business, but he chose to do good and stand by women and for this, ETV Bharat salutes Madhya Pradesh's 'Padman'. After all, one who knows how to honour a woman before oneself is a real man.
