Madhya Pradesh: 22 die after bus plunges into dry river bed from bridge in Khargone

At least 22 people were killed after the bus they were travelling plunged into a dry river bed.

Khargone: 22 people were killed and 25 were injured after a private bus fell off a 20 feet high bridge in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone, officials said. The rescue operations were undertaken by the passersby and villagers. The injured have been admitted to hospitals in the vicinity.

Khargone Superintendent of Police Dharam Veer Singh said the injured were brought to the district hospital and were being treated there. District Collector Shivraj Singh Verma and Khargone MLA Ravi Joshi visited the accident site and lauded the efforts taken by the locals in the rescue operation and in saving many lives by moving them to the hospital on time. The incident occurred in the locality which falls under the jurisdiction of Oon police station area.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condoled the untimely death of people in the bus accident. The chief minister's office also announced relief amounting to rupees four lakh for the bereaved families, rupees 50 thousand to the seriously injured and rupees 25 thousand to others who have been injured in the accident. Proper arrangements have also been made by the government for free treatment of the injured, the CM's office said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased in the bus accident. The injured would be given Rs 50,000, his office stated.

Magisterial probe-A magisterial probe has been ordered into the accident which occurred at 8.40 am, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said. The bus broke railings of Dasanga bridge and fell on a dry bed of the Borad river near Dongargaon village, the minister said.

The bus was carrying around 50 passengers at the time of the accident, the Minister said quoting the police officials. On the death toll, the minister said initial reports confirmed the death toll as fifteen and with about 20-25 others being injured in the accident.

Earlier in April, around 40 people were injured when a Rajasthan Roadways bus plunged into a canal in Haryana's Rewari district on Delhi- Jaipur Highway. The Model Town police rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation soon after. Passengers trapped in the bus were rushed to government trauma centers in Rewari and Bawal for treatment.

The Rajasthan Roadways bus was en route to Delhi from Jaipur on Friday morning when the mishap occurred. When the bus was nearing Asalwas village of Rewari, nearly 12 kilometers from the district headquarters on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the bus veered off the road and plunged into the Jawahar Lal Nehru canal.

In February, at least four were killed and 35 injured after a bus travelling from Indore to Chhatarpur overturned at Nivar Ghati on the Sagar-Chhatarpur road. Passengers who were seriously injured were rushed to Bundelkhand Medical College, other were treated at Shahgarh Health Centre. The deceased included a woman, a middle-aged man and two youths who died on the spot. Their bodies were taken to Sagar Hospital for postmortem.
