Kasaragod (Kerala): A lower Primary school in Kasaragod District in Kerala sent greeting cards to all the students this New Year, in an effort to raise their spirits and to spread hope and happiness among them.

While the schools remain closed for younger students, the children have been stuck in their homes and bored with indoor activities, owing to the pandemic regulations. They were too excited and curious to open the post addressed to them delivered by the postman, in this age of online communication.

Chandera Issathul Islam ALP School sent New Year greeting cards to all the students by snail mail.

Though New Year's day is usually celebrated with fun and frolic at schools usually, this year the situation is different.

Some of the teachers with the school came up with the idea of sending postal cards and made it happen so that the students were happy.

The teachers’ main aim was to gift the happiness of opening a snail mail addressed to them, at a time when wishes can be sent through the online platforms in a fraction of a second.

For the children in 3rd and 4th classes, the teachers sent a New Year greeting card and a calendar, while the students in the first and the second classes were sent greeting cards which have pictures for them to colour.

The teachers said that this gesture is a message that the school is with them during these times of pandemic and crisis. Besides, it is an opportunity for children to know about the functions of our postal department when snail mail is rarely used.

As the students can't reach schools even for the new year due to the COVID situation, the schools had novel programmes for new year celebrations with the students. Staff with the Government LP School, Cheriyakkara, visited the students’ homes and gifted them a calendar to the new year.

New year programmes including songs and stories are also being conducted in the Whatsapp groups for the students.

This new year also brings hope that the COVID pandemic settles and we will soon return to our old normal.
