Red torch ginger endemic to Thailand, Malaysia spotted in Kerala

Red torch ginger, endemic to Thailand and Malaysia, has grabbed people's attention with its bright red flowers in Idukki district of Kerala. Mistaking it to be lily, KN Raju, a labourer, planted it ten years ago in his land.

Idukki: Lured by the exotic red colour and intricate patterns, passersby remain spellbound at flowers bloomed in a labourer's land in Kizhakedam area, Idukki district, Kerala. Red torch ginger, endemic to Thailand and Malaysia has grabbed people's attention who storm the site.

One fine day, K Raju, a labourer, brought the plant from his friend in Pethotti area ten years ago assuming it to be lily. Two months ago, flowers started to bloom, raising eyebrows. Locals were astonished at the variety and after pondering over it, it was found that the plant is known as Red Ginger Lily, Torch Lily and Wild Ginger. It is a member of the genus Cincyberaceae, in which Ginger also is a member.

Scientifically known as Atelian Gera Elatier, the plant blooms during mild winters. The flowers can sustain for over a month and it is often spotted in flower vases in foreign countries. The name Red Torch Ginger is attributed to its structure.

Interestingly, flowers are used as an ingredient in fish curry in Malaysia. Asam Laksa, a noodle soup with fish and Sambai Bangot, another soup are made with flowers. It is also used in manufacturing medicines. Towering high, the plant grows more than six feet. Stem cutting and planting is the breeding pattern of the plant.
