LDF retains power winning 99 seats, decimates UDF to 41

In a historic victory, the Communist Party of India (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) retained power in Kerala by winning 99 seats against 41 seats of Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Assembly polls.

In the 140-member Kerala Assembly, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led the National Democratic Front (NDA) failed to hold on to the single-seat it won of Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram in 2016 and drew a blank this time.

In LDF, CPI (M) led from the front winning 68 seats, including the independent candidates backed by the party. The closest ally CPI won 17 seats, while the new entrant to the Left fold, Kerala Congress (M) managed to win 5 seats out of the 12 seats it contested. Janata Dal (Secular) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 2 seats each, and the Loktantrik Janta Dal (LJD) won just one seat out of three seats it contested. Kerala Congress (B) retained its sitting seat, while Indian National League (INL) and Congress (Secular) won one seat each.

The main opposition Congress was able to win just 21 seats out of the 91 seats it contested. The UDF partner Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also put a dismal performance winning just 15 seats out of the 27 seats it contested. When Kerala Congress won 2 seats, the Kerala Congress (Jacob), the National Secular Conference and the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMP) won one seat each.

When the left under Pinarayi Vijayan routed the Opposition both Congress and BJP suffered a huge setback. In the BJP, senior leaders like Kummanam Rajasekharan, state president K Surendran who contested from two seats, Sobha Surendran and Metroman E Sreedharan faced defeats.

CPI(M) supporters celebrate in Dharmadom

As per the latest trends, the LDF is leading in 84 and won 11; UDF leading in 42 and has won a single seat, and the BJP leading in 2 seats.

The Left's stunning performance can be attributed to no one other than Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who led from the front. Vijayan, despite running into numerous troubles in various issues, stood his ground and boldly went forward. His writ ran large when it came to selecting party candidates, with seven ministers and 26 legislators left out.

Of the NDA, 'Metroman' E. Sreedharan is fighting hard and in one particular booth in his constituency Palakkad, he has got all the votes and at the moment, he is leading by around 5000 votes.

The pattern right from the start of the counting of votes was the UDF was unable to move above the 60 seat mark and in many of these constituencies, it is leading with a slender margin and if it continues, then there could be more shocks and the Left might well end up with 100 seats or more.

Few hours to go for counting, both LDF, UDF hopeful of winning people's mandate

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): As only a few hours are left for the counting of votes for 140 constituencies in the Kerala Assembly polls set to begin, candidates in the electoral contest are keeping high hopes and exuding confidence that the people's mandate will be in their favour.

Riding high after various pre-poll and post-poll surveys that predicted Communist Party of India (M)-led Left Democratic Front victory, acting state secretary and LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan has exerted confidence that the Left will continue in power with a thumping victory.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who had said earlier that the LDF would retain power in the state, speaking to media on Saturday, however, chose not to go for any prediction.

"Let's wait till tomorrow. Everything will be clear. After that, I will comment," he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress-led United Democratic Front camp, based on their assessment from booth level data, has dismissed the exit poll surveys as 'unscientific' and is confident of regaining the power in the state.

"This kind of exit polls which is prepared after seeking the opinion of about 250 people from a constituency which have more than 2 lakh voters does not have any scientific base. Kerala has a history that shows these kinds of exit polls are often wrong. In fact, an anti-UDF stand that started before the election is visible on all of them. The UDF will overcome all this," said Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who is also the opposition leader.

In Kerala, leaders of both LDF and UDF have expressed confidence of victory in Kerala polls ahead of counting. The exit polls have indicated that the ruling LDF will create history by getting re-elected but leaders of Congress-led UDF have rejected these surveys and expressed confidence of their alliance coming to power in the southern state. LDF leaders have said that the exit polls reflect the acceptability of the ruling alliance among people.

The counting of votes for 140 member assembly will begin at 8 am. The polling was held in a single phase on April 6.
