Amicus Curiae appointed by Kerala HC has suggested a ban on commercial hiring of elephants. Elephants remain a major attraction in the state, as every major event and celebration is incomplete without the tusker.

Kochi: The Amicus Curiae appointed by the Kerala High Court has proposed a ban on commercial leasing and hiring of elephants in the state.

The suggestion was made by amicus curiae, responding to a writ petition filed by M N Jayachandran seeking prohibition on the use of weak and injured captive elephants in festivals and public events.

Elephants remain a major attraction in the state, as every major event and celebration is incomplete without the tusker.

The amicus curiae report mentions various exploitation against elephants in the trade. The elephant is being forced to stand for long hours and transported to various locations without proper rest, cites the report.

The report also points out that Sec 43 of wildlife protection act prohibits all sorts of transfer of captive elephants by the way of sale or offer for sale comes under the ambit of the act.
