Gold Smuggling: NIA requests Interpol to issue blue corner notice against accused

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reportedly requested Interpol to issue a blue corner notice against accused Faisal Fareed in the Kerala gold smuggling case.

The NIA had earlier requested the special court in Kochi to allow proceedings for the issuance of a Blue Corner Notice of Interpol against Fareed.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime.

Earlier on July 14, a non-bailable warrant was issued against Faisal Fareed by a special NIA court in Kochi. The NIA informed the special court that they will hand over the warrant to Interpol as Faisal Fareed is currently in Dubai.

"The documents were forged by Faisal Fareed to ensure diplomatic protection for the baggage. Fareed is the third accused in the case. The gold smuggled into Kerala was not used for jewellery but terror activities. The accused smuggled gold twice in 2019, in two batches of 18 kg and 9 kg," the NIA had submitted.

Statement of UAE Consul gunman recorded

Meanwhile, the statement of UAE Consulate gunman Jayaghosh was recorded before the magistrate in Thiruvananthapuram.

Jayaghosh, who was deployed as a gunman attached to the UAE Consulate few months back, had gone missing and was subsequently found in a semi-unconscious state near his house.

The police suspect that Jayaghosh may have tried to commit suicide by slashing his wrist.

The matter relates to seizure of 30 kg gold from a diplomatic consignment at the Trivandrum International Airport on Sunday which snowballed into a major political controversy in Kerala. The National Investigation Agency has been entrusted with the probe into the case by the Centre.
