Kozhikode (Kerala): Senior Congress leader and former minister M Kamalam passed away here on Thursday at around 6 am. She was 94 and suffering from ailments for a long time.
Her last rites will be performed at her residence on Thursday at around 5 pm.
She was one of the most prominent women leaders of Congress in Kerala history. She had served as minister for co-operation in K Karunakaran’s cabinet from 1982 to 1987. She was a close friend of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Kamalam had also served as Women Commission chairperson, KPCC vice president, KPCC general secretary and AICC member.
She made her political entry in 1946 by contesting local body elections from Kozhikode. She was elected as corporation councillor in this election.
Kamalam, wife of late Mambatta Samikutty is survived by sons M Yatheendradas, M Murali, M Rajagopal, M Vijayakrishnan and daughter Padmaja Charudathan.
As a mark of respect, the Congress has postponed the anti-CAA protest scheduled in Kozhikode district on Thursday.
