Coimbatore: Suspected terror contact person, 2 aids taken into custody

A suspected terror contact person, Kader Rahim was taken into custody following the intelligence report that six terrorists reached Coimbatore. An accompanying woman was also arrested along with him. Special Intelligence Unit of state police has taken two more people who were in touch with Kader, from Tamil Nadu into custody for questioning.

Thrissur(Kerala): Kader Rahim, a native of Kodungaloor in Kerala and a suspected terror contact person, was taken into custody following an intelligence report that six Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists reached Coimbatore.

Special Intelligence Unit of state police has taken into custody Siddiq from Chennai and Zaheer from Ponvizha Nagar, at Ukkadam in Coimbatore, for questioning.

They were kept at Karunya Nagar police station in Coimbatore district, where SIU officials from Chennai and West Zone IG Periaiyah DIG (Coimbatore Range) G Karthikeyan are questioning the duo. Police claimed that the two persons were in regular contact with Abdul Kader over the mobile phone. Kader allegedly assisted the LeT group.

An accompanying woman was also arrested along with him.

The investigation team was searching for him after receiving the information from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

It was reported two days ago that he had reached Kochi from Bahrain.

The police have taken him into custody while he came to surrender at the NIA court.

According to the police, six members of the terror outfit infiltrated into the state by sea from Sri Lanka and moved to different cities, including Coimbatore.

To avoid further disaster happenings, especially on upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the police is in charge of full tight security in major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore etc.

Security has been stepped up at many places, including airports, railway stations, bus stands and places of worship across the state.

An alert has been sounded, especially in coastal districts, to prevent any further possible intrusion.

"There has been tight patrolling across Coimbatore district. Vehicle checks have been intensified in the city and border areas," the police said.

Though the identity or the nationality of the intruders were yet to be ascertained, sources said that one person belonged to Pakistan.

There was reportedly an intelligence input that a group of terrorists was planning to create terror and panic in the country.

Security has been strengthened at all important installations and public places across Karnataka too. With a heavy deployment of police personnel at every nook and corner of prominent places in the state, extensive checking was carried out using a metal detector and sniffer dogs. Security has been strengthened at all important installations and public places such as bus stands, railway stations, temples, markets, malls and government offices.

Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao had on last week issued a memo to all the officers to ensure tight security at every important installations.
