Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government is likely to decide on initiating a case against opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala — in connection with his alleged involvement in bar bribery, on Wednesday.

High-level meetings are on discussing whether to seek State Governor Arif Mohammed Khan’s permission in initiating a case against the opposition leader who holds a cabinet rank.

Bar owner Biju Ramesh had disclosed that Rs 1 crore was given as bribery to Ramesh Chennithala. Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had received a complaint based on this allegation and the State Government had given the nod for a vigilance probe.

The Government had decided that further action in the case would be taken only after clearly evaluating the legal dimensions. The Government had sought legal advice on the same.

The State Government is mainly taking into consideration the legal advice that the Governor’s nod is not necessary to initiate a case against the opposition leader. However, another suggestion that the Governor’s consent may be taken as the opposition leader holds a cabinet rank is also being weighed by the Government. It is learnt that high-level discussions are on to take a decision on this matter.
