Mysuru Dasara: Historic Jamboo Savari to be held today

Historic Jamboo Savari will be led by the elephant Abhimanyu carrying a 750 kg gold howdah with the idol of goddess Chamundeshwari on it.

Mysuru (Karnataka): Mysuru, the cultural city of Karnataka is all set to host the 'Jamboo Savari', the finale of the 10-day Dasara festivities. Thousands of people are expected to witness the grand Jamboo Savari, a march of a dozen caparisoned elephants led by elephant Abhimanyu carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Mysuru royals, on a 750 kg howdah or "Ambari" with gold. The procession will begin from Mysuru Palace and culminate at Bannimantap, covering around 5.5 kilometres.

More than 49 Tableaux and 95 cultural troupes will take part in the Jamboo Savari. The cultural troupes will depict the art, culture, and government projects of the state in the procession. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will offer puja to the 'Nandhi Dhwaja' between 1.46 pm to 2.08 pm, which is the auspicious 'Makara Lagna'. The procession will begin after the Chief Minister showers flowers on the Chamundeswari idol placed in Ambari between 4.40 pm and 5 pm, during the 'Meena Lagna'. The procession will end at Bannimantapa.

Later, the Panjina Kavayatu or torchlight parade will be held at Bannimantap at around 7 p.m. The Torchlight Parade is another attraction of the Mysuru Dasara. Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and many others will participate in this parade.

City Police Commissioner Ramesh Banoth said, "Over 6,000 policemen have been deployed along the 5.5-kilometre-long route of the Jamboo Savari for security. A Deputy Inspector General, eight Superintendent of Police, 10 Additional Superintendent of Police, CCTV cameras and Intelligence Department officials have been heavily deployed around the palace for security."

He also said, "Security has also been beefed up around Abhimanyu carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari on a 750 kg Ambari made with gold. Bomb detection and suppression squad, and dog squads have also been roped in to keep a vigil."
