Death toll rises to 40

Red alert in Karnataka as more heavy rains predicted

There seems to be no let-up to the monsoon mayhem in Karnataka, with the weather office sounding red alert as more heavy rains are forecast in he coastal, central and southern regions of the state in the coming week, an official said on Sunday.

"Red alert has been given as the forecast is heavy to very heavy rains in coastal, central and southern districts of the state over the next 4-5 days due to the southwest monsoon peaking and favourable conditions, including formation of thick clouds and strong wind movement," said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). 

The districts to be most affected are coastal districts of Dakshin Kannada and Udupi, Chikkamagluru, Hassan and Shivamogga in the central part of the state and Malnad and Kodagu in the south. 

"Heavy rain also likely to occur in Belagavi, Dharwad and Haveri districts across the state's northwest region," said the official.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday said the preliminary estimate of flood-related loss in the state was Rs 10,000 crore even as he urged the Centre to release Rs 3,000 crore as immediate aid.

"Our preliminary estimate of losses is Rs 10,000 crore, but I personally believe that the losses will stand between Rs 30,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore. We have urged the Central government to release Rs 3,000
crore immediately as assistance, Yediyurappa said.

He said this at a meeting held at the Sambra Airport after he conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas with Home Minister Amit Shah.

World Heritage site Hampi faces flood threat

The world heritage site Hampi along the banks of Tungabhadra River in Ballari district has been inundated with authorities releasing over 1.70 lakh cusecs of water from a reservoir on Sunday morning.

The district administration has asked residents living along the rive banks to move to safer places as all 33 gates of the Tungabhadra Dam were opened following heavy inflow of over two lakh cusecs in the wake of incessant rains in the catchment areas in the Western Ghats for the last one week, officials said.

Water has entered the UNESCO heritage site Hampi, the erstwhile capital of Vijayanagar empire known for its rich architecture, while an Anjaneya temple in front of the Kampli Fort has partially submerged.

Tourists in Hampi have been shifted to safer places, officials said.

A team of Navy officers covered a distance of more than 20 km to rescue the family of an Army man in Chandur village of Belagavi district, which is hit by massive floods.

The marooned family was stranded in a village school. The team had to cross the Krishna river which had strong currents, and then to navigate through the undulated areas of the village.

Finally, the team was able to make it and get the distressed family along with four more people who required immediate medical attention.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Sunday accused the Central government of ignoring the flood situation in Karnataka and demanded an assistance of Rs 5,000 crore.

He also accused the Central government of giving Karnataka "step-motherly treatment" and said that the funds released so far are not even sufficient for the first-aid.

Shah undertakes aerial survey of floot-hit areas

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today undertook an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of Karnataka, where 31 people have lost their lives and more than four lakh have been displaced.

Shah, also the BJP president, arrived by a special aircraft from Chennai at the Sambra Airport in Belagavi and set out on the survey of some of the affected areas onboard an army helicopter, official sources said.

He is accompanied by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Suresh Angadi, Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore and Hukkeri BJP MLA Umesh Katti.

An official earlier in the day said the home minister will assess the flood situation in Belagavi district.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conduct an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas of Belagavi district in Karnataka.

Shah will reach Belagavi at 2.30 pm and conduct an aerial survey of flood-prone areas in the district. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa will also accompany him.

After conducting the aerial survey, Yeddyurappa will meet senior officials in the presence of Shah at 4.30 pm at Sambra Airport in Belagavi.

Bengaluru:  Four more people have died in rain-related incidents in Karnataka, taking the toll to 31 on Sunday as the flood situation remained grim in the state.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conduct an aerial survey of flood affected areas in Belagavi district and Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa will join him in the exercise.

An official release said the death toll has risen to 31 with four more deaths last night while 14 people were missing.

As many as 3.14 lakh people have been evacuated and of them 2.18 lakh people are staying in 924 relief camps, it said.

"I am going to Belgaum (Belagavi). Our (BJP) national president Amit Shah is arriving there. Together we will conduct aerial survey in Belgaum, Bagalkote and other areas. I will be back after he leaves for Delhi," Yediyurappa told reporters here.

The state government on Saturday declared 80 taluks in 17 districts flood affected and said relief and rescue operations will be carried out in a more focused manner in these places.

Most of the Taluks are in Belagavi district which bore the brunt of the nature's fury.

The government has assessed that 21,431 houses and crops in 4.16 lakh hectares had been damaged in the floods following heavy rains. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday conducted an aerial survey of the worst-affected Belagavi and Bagalkote districts.

In the wake of series of landslides, the national highway connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru will remain closed at least till Monday, official sources said.

They also said there was slight reduction in the water level in the Netravati river in Dakshina Kannada district.

The water level near Bantwal has reduced from 11 metres above the danger level to 9.1 metres above the danger level.

The overflowing river waters inundated several areas in Bantwal with the affected people, including the family of former union minister Janardhana Pujari, being rescued.

Reports received here said Tungabhadra river in Ballari completely submerged a bridge near Hampi Fort, affecting roafd traffic between Kampli and Gangawati towns.
