Environmental activists demand traffic ban in Cubbon Park

Alleging that the state government is allowing traffic even on Sunday, which was banned earlier, the Park Association at Bengaluru staged a protest on Sunday. With the air pollution gripping the city, the environmentalists are demanding that Cubbon Park like Lal Bagh in the city be completely traffic-free.

Bengaluru: The environmentalists and members of Cubbon Park Association staged a protest on Sunday demanding a complete ban on traffic inside the park. It was a long pending demand of the activists to ban the traffic completely inside the park premises.

After the COVID19 lockdown, the sprawling park was closed for the public and traffic. Though it was allowed for the public since May 18, the traffic ban continued to be in place.

Under these circumstances, the authorities decided to allow the traffic movement like pre-COVID conditions starting from August 24. However, the decision was deferred again. Before the COVID19 lockdown, the traffic used to be suspended on Sundays while traffic during the rest of the days also used to be suspended from 10 am to 8 pm every day.

Meanwhile, members of the Park Association staged a protest near Cubbon Park on Sunday alleging that the state government was allowing traffic on Sunday. Municipal council member Vasant Kumar and others participated in the protest.

The activists for long have been demanding the complete traffic ban in Cubbon Park just like the Lal Bagh in the city. Electric buggies could be utilized to enable the movement of sick and elderly people inside the park, they stated.

The Garden city has lost much of the greenery in the past decades and the huge parks like Cubbon Park and Lal Bagh are the major lung spaces of the city. Created in 1870, the park spread in 300 acres is the home of a variety of flora and fauna in the busy Bengaluru city.
