Tumkur (Karnataka): A group of unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked a couple while they were heading towards their home at Kallur village in Karnataka's Tumkur on Friday.
Later, it was learnt that the girl's family was unhappy over their love marriage and it had conspired to attack them.
The victims have been identified as Nagajyothi and Akshay, the residents of Bhainsa of Nirmal district.
According to sources, the incident took place while the couple was heading towards Kallur after leaving Nagajyothi's examination centre at Vasavi college.
Suddenly, a group of people travelling in a car hit the couple's motorcycle and fled from the spot leaving them critically injured.
Some local residents, who found the couple lying bleeding on the road helped them to a private hospital.
Some of them said the couple had married a year ago. It was an inter-caste marriage, which her father was opposed to, they said.
Police rushed to the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the miscreants, sources said.
The preliminary investigation showed that the reason for the attack was their marriage, a police official said.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the attackers and further investigation is underway, sources added.
