Bengaluru: BJP has lost its only fort in the south today with its defeat in Karnataka elections. The party was pinning its hopes on old Mysore but that too was shattered along with losing its citadel in central Karnataka.
In this assembly election, the ruling BJP has not been able to open accounts in nine districts. Recording a zero performance in nine districts, the party has to be satisfied with only one position each in eight districts. In the remaining seven districts, BJP won only two seats each. Overall, performance in the 24 districts was unsatisfactory.
BJP has managed to retain Bangalore City, Belgaum, Bidar, Udupi and Shimoga. BJP has bagged 15 seats in Bangalore City, seven seats in Belgaum, six in South Kannada, five in Udupi, four in Bidar, three in Shimoga and three in Dharwad. The party has failed to retain strongholds including Chikkamagaluru, Bellary and Kodagu. An abysmally poor performance has been recorded in Mandya, Ramnagar, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar and Kolar.

This time, the BJP was pinning its hopes on the old Mysore region. But, it could only manage six seats in the total 61 constituencies of this part. In Central Karnataka, BJP won only five seats in the 25 constituencies, which too has been among the party's strongholds.
Again, in Hyderabad Karnataka, BJP achieved victory in only 10 out of 41 constituencies. The party secured only 16 out of 50 seats in North Karnataka while in Bengalure it bagged 15 out of 28 seats. Finally, it managed 13 out of 19 seats in Coast. Overall, it has faced a crushing defeat in three out of five zones.
