Jharkhand's 'Birdman' makes more than 30 different birdcalls

Pannalal Mahto, a resident Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, has the special ability to imitate more than 30 species of common birds found in the state. He is also popular as the Birdman of Jharkhand.

Ramgarh (Jharkhand): Pannalal Mahto, also known as the Birdman of Jharkhand, has the special ability to imitate the sounds of almost 30-40 species of common birds found in the state.

Mahto, a resident of Kundru village in Ramgarh district, has a very special talent to identify more than 100 species of birds by their calls.

Mahto has been making these calls since the age of 8, and claims that birds understand when he 'speaks' in their language.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Mahto said, "I spend hours and hours in jungle and tries to know everything about birds. I have spent major part of my life with birds and animals. Even if you close my eyes, I can tell you the name of birds just by listening their calls.

He is a farmer by profession and reportedly spends a large part of his income on causes supporting the conservation of birds.

His wife, Veena Devi said that she did not like this work earlier, but now it seems good because people call her husband by the name of 'Birdman.'

It is to be noted that spending hours in the jungle and 'talking' to birds have become Mahto's daily routine. The puropse of Mahto is to save these birds so that their chirping keeps echoing in the state of Jharkhand.
