Latehar: In a shocking incident of mob lynching, an elederly couple was beaten to death by the locals over allegations of practising witchcraft in Chandwa police station area of Latehar district in Jharkhand, police said on Wednesday. Police have detained around a dozen villagers for interrogation in the case. The deceased have been identified as Sibal Ganjhu and his wife Boni Devi, residents of Faisal village under Chandwa police station area.
A police official said that the incident took place on Tuesday night. It is said that the locals beat the elderly couple to death on the allegation of witchcraft. According to the sources, the couple was accused of practising witchcraft to harm the villagers. Soon after the incident, the local police rushed to the spot and started investigating the matter.

About a dozen villagers are being interrogated by taking them into custody. The bodies have been taken into custody by the police and sent for post-mortem. Village sources said that a panchayat was held in the village last night wherein it was decided to beat both husband and wife with sticks. According to the decision taken in the Panchayat, both the husband and wife were beaten with sticks, due to which both of them died on the spot.
Following the incident, senior police officers of the district rushed to the spot besides local police. Police officials said that several suspects have been taken into custody and are being interrogated in the case. An investigation has been launched in the case to nab the culprits. Police have registered a case into the incident.
