SLSA observed World Population Day

The J&K State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) under the guidance of Justice Gita Mittal, Chief Justice J&K High Court and Patron-in-Chief of J&K SLSA observed the 'World Population Day' with an objective to raise awareness on various issues related to the population including the importance of Family Planning, Gender Equality, Poverty, Health and Human Rights.

Srinagar: Under the visionary guidance of Justice Gita Mittal, Chief Justice J&K High Court and Patron-in-Chief J&K State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) and the insightful supervision of Justice Rajesh Bindal, Executive Chairman, J&K SLSA, “World Population Day” was observed by J&K SLSA today with an objective to raise awareness on various issues related to the population including the importance of Family Planning, Gender Equality, Poverty, Health and Human Rights.

The day was observed in tandem with the theme of World Population Day, 2020, “Safeguarding the Health and Rights of Women and Girls Around the World” in the reflection of the vulnerabilities of Women and Girls during the current pandemic crisis and the need to safeguard the overall physical and mental health as well as rights of Women and girls for ensuring a balanced and stabilized society.

On the occasion, J&K SLSA observed the day by organizing series of activities conducted by District Legal Services Authorities and their Para Legal Volunteers involving persons of all age groups across the districts of UT’s of J&K and Ladakh.

At Baramulla, the day was observed by DLSA by organizing a webinar on the topic “Sustainable Development” inviting the participation of retainer lawyers, PLV’s and staff Members. The paralegal volunteers further undertook awareness campaign at the community level for generating awareness on the issues related to overpopulation.

DLSA, Samba observed the Population Day in tandem with the theme for safeguarding the Health and Rights of Women and Girls by organizing an “Online Capacity Building Programme” with Retainer Lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers and Staff Members for the purpose of sensitization and for devising the working strategy for generating awareness on the topic amongst general public and women and girls in particular. The paralegal volunteers ensured awareness on the population issues and particularly on the topics related to reproductive health, maternal and natal Health, access to health services & education through a door to door outreach.

DLSA, Ramban celebrated the day through virtual mode with retainer lawyers, PLV’s and staff members in the light of the theme of the day. The programme was attended by the PLV's along with the people from respective villages for the purpose of dissemination of the message to the maximum number of people.

DLSA, Kargil also observed the day with PLV’s, litigants and staff wherein the message about the problems of overpopulation was disseminated. The negative impact of the overpopulation on Education, Health Care, Food Resources and Housing was also discussed.

At Anantnag, District Legal Services Authority observed the day across different places by organizing panel discussions, seminars and awareness programmes on the theme.

DLSA, Pulwama marked the day with TLSC’s of Awantipora and Pampore by sensitizing people about the various aspects related to family planning. The importance of pre and post maternal and natal care was highlighted for ensuring a healthy family.

Similar activities were also undertaken by other District Legal Services Authorities of J&K and Ladakh with the focus on encouraging people to develop knowledge about population issues and making them realize the importance of family planning, right to health, reproductive health, use of contraceptives, gender equality and such other related issues. Due precautions regarding safety norms were taken and all SOP’s issued by the concerned authorities regarding the current pandemic were followed strictly during the observance of the day.
