Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir): A local T-20 cricket tournament was on Friday inaugurated in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, and was dedicated to martyred constable Mohammad Altaf.

He encouraged youngsters to use such tournaments to showcase their talent and eventually earn opportunities to perform at higher levels of the sport.

The T-20 league has been dedicated to Mohammad Altaf, who was martyred after killing a terrorist while saving a BJP leader in Ganderbal.

Lauding Hussain for his courage, the DGP said that though he sacrificed his life, he fulfilled his duty.

Welcoming the Jammu and Kashmir Police's initiative, a local cricketer said such tournaments would provide a much-needed platform for the youth.

"It is a good initiative towards unearthing hidden talent. We usually do not get a platform, so this is nice. Cricket is a big sport here, but other distractions like drugs keep the youth away from the sport," he said.

Earlier on October 6, terrorists attacked a BJP leader in Ganderbal district, leaving his personal security guard dead. In the retaliatory action by the security personnel, one terrorist was also killed.

The militants shot at on Ghulam Qadir, a district vice president of the BJP, near his residence at Nunner. Altaf, who was injured in the attack, was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
