Srinagar (Jammu-Kashmir): Dilbagh Singh, Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday said the graph of militancy in Kashmir valley showed a declining trend and recruitments into militant ranks had reduced. Active militants were "less than half of what they used to be," he said.
Singh was speaking with reporters in Kupwara where he visited the family of the police officer killed in Khaniyar, Srinagar. He also reviewed the security situation in the district.
“There has been a reduction in militant recruitment. Youth need to focus on life, studies and career. They should avoid irresponsible acts,” Singh said.
Speaking about militancy in North Kashmir, Singh said the recruitment had dropped significantly with no local militant active in the border district of Kupwara. He said the conditions in Bandipora and Sopore had already improved.
The DGP said police and security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir were working round the clock to maintain law and order and that the situation had improved greatly in the recent past. "However, some elements want to disturb the peace in the valley," he said
Earlier, Singh appealed to the youth lured into militancy in the valley to shun the path of violence and destruction, saying it has not proved beneficial.
The DGP, on behalf of the police and security forces, asked the youth, pushed on the path of violence by Pakistan-sponsored militancy, to join the mainstream of the society and lead a peaceful life with their families. "Neither in the past nor in the future has the path of violence proven or will prove beneficial," he told them.
