Kashmiri cyclist sets record after Kanyakumari trip

Adil Teli, a professional cyclist from Kashmir has entered the Guinness Book of World Record for cycling from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in eight days.

Srinagar: The Journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari covering India's long stretch always fascinates everyone. Adil Teli is a 23-year-old and a professional cyclist from Narbal area of Budgam district in Kashmir. He completed his journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari which is around 3,600 km in eight days, one hour 37 minutes. He reached Kanyakumari on Tuesday.

Braving all odds including rough terrains, harsh climatic conditions, traffic snarls and other difficulties, Adil kept on riding with full energy to break the Guinness Book of World Record set by Om Mahajan, who covered the same distance within eight days, seven hours and 38 minutes last year.

He started his journey on March 22 morning after being flagged off by Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole from Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.

" I started cycling from Kashmir on March 22 and reached Kanyakumari in eight days, one hour 37 minutes," said Teli.

Passionate about cycling, Adil had already set a record for covering 440 Kilometres distance from Srinagar to Leh in just 26 hours and 30 minutes.

He covered many states including Jammu, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and finally reached Kanyakumari. He pedalled through cities including Sanant Nagar NH44, Qazigund, New Tunnel, Banihal, Nashri Tunnel, Lakhapur, Pathankot, Jalandar, Ludhiana, Delhi, Agra, Gwalior, Jhansi, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Gutti, Banglore, Madurai and finally Kanyakumari.

Abraq Agro, a company, which supported and sponsored Adil on the cycling expedition has lauded Adil on this great achievement. Abraq Agro also expressed its gratitude to the Divisional Administration in Kashmir for its support throughout Adil’s journey in setting the new record.

For Adil, Srinagar – Leh Cycling expedition boosted him to aim for breaking the World Record; however, it was not easy and required dedication, passion, stamina and proper guidance and training. To chase his dream of setting the world record, Adil went to Amritsar where he underwent rigorous training for four to five months.

He received training from Rajesh, Head of Department of cycling at Gurunanak Dev University. He was trained in different levels including 10,000 kilometres and 20,000 kilometres.

He was amongst the top 10 in the National Championship. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was very difficult to arrange bicycle parts and due to the ban on imported parts. Everything was managed with the support of sponsors.
