J&K: India's first cable-stayed rail bridge completed on Anji Khad

The total length of the J&K's Anji Khad Bridge's cable strand is 653 km and it weighs 848.7 MT. It is part of the Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project that plays a crucial role in connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country's railway network.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) : India has completed its first cable-stayed railway bridge popularly known as Anji Khad Bridge in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said already that the bridge is ready and all the 96 cables are set. Now, the bridge has been completed in 11 months, according to sources. The first cable bridge also drew appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Minister posted a time-lapse video on Twitter detailing the works completed at various stages of the cable bridge project. The total length of the cable strand used in the bridge is 653 km, weighing 848.7 MT. In the video, the location of every single cable, from the first to the last, is shown. This cable bridge is part of the Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project and connects the T2 tunnel on the Katra side and the T3 tunnel on the Reasi side.

The bridge has a single-line railway track and a 3.75 metres wide service road. It is 725 metres long, including a 473 metres long asymmetric cable-stayed bridge balanced on the axis of a central pylon of height 193 metres from the top of the foundation. The bridge came up on Anji Khad, a tributary of the Chenab River.

Anji Khad cable bridge is now being considered an engineering marvel as its completion remained a challenge till the end because of the tough topography of the location. History is made with the completion of the country's first cable-stayed rail bridge in Reasi, said a representative of the Northern Railways. It is located next to the world’s highest railway bridge standing over the Chenab River at Kouri village in Reasi. Anji Khad Bridge will play a key role in connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the world.
