Srinagar: Clashes broke out between suspected militants and security forces in the Noor Bagh area of Srinagar, the summer capital of centrally administered Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday.
According to a senior police officer, "police were informed by a reliable source that militants were hiding in the area. Security forces then cordoned off the area."
"When the forces started searching a specific place, the militants in hiding opened fire. The two sides are currently exchanging fire," he added.
The Police later said that the militants managed to escape after dropping their weapons during a brief gunfight.
"A small team of police while laying cordon were fired upon by militants. Seem they escaped after dropping their weapons,” a senior police officer said, adding "one pistol and one AK 47 has been recovered."
Meanwhile, security forces launched a massive search operation in the area to nab the militants.
Earlier, a few days ago, Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar had claimed that four militants were active in the city.
