New Delhi: Punjab Congress unit, state in-charge Harish Rawat has flown to Chandigarh to meet CM Amarinder Singh, amid reports of an escalating feud within the party. According to sources, CM Amarinder is said to have written to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi saying that the party would split if Navjot Singh Sidhu is given charge of the Punjab Congress, and that he wouldn't contest if the latter is elevated to the top organizational post of the state.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu met Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunil Jakhar on Saturday, amid speculations over whether the party would appoint the cricketer-turned-politician as the next head of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The meeting lasted for over 30-minutes, following which Sidhu speaking to media termed Jakhar as an elder brother and a guiding force. While, Jakhar, in turn, hailed Sidhu as a competent leader. The meeting between Sidhu and Jakhar assumes significance amid the simmering tensions in the Punjab Congress following the fallout between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Sidhu. After meeting Jakhar, Sidhu also interacted with Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa's at his residence in Chandigarh and then met Balbir Singh Sidhu.

Earlier, Sidhu had also met party chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi in a bid to arrive at a truce formula over the state unit revamp, which was also attended by AICC in-charge of Punjab Harish Rawat and Rahul Gandhi. Congress was mulling an idea of appointing a Dalit and an upper caste Hindu as the working presidents, sources said. However, Amarinder Singh's unhappiness has forced the party to think otherwise.
