New Delhi: In yet another snatching incident from the national capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's niece was mugged in the Civil Lines area of New Delhi on Saturday.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Damyanti Ben Modi said that two bike-borne assailants snatched her purse right outside the gates of Gujarati Samaj Bhavan in the Civil Lines area while she was returning in an auto. The assailants managed to flee from the spot.
Damyanti said she lost Rs 56,000 in cash along with two mobile phones, her transaction cards and other important documents.
Pertinently, the incident took place in a very important area of the national capital, with the residences of numerous VIPs within a few kilometres of the spot.
Gujarati Samaj Bhawan is just a stone's throw away from various prominent schools of the city, and is also very close to the residences of the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
"The security situation needs to be made more stringent. If such incidents keep happening to normal people, it is not a good thing," Damyanti said.
She added that the situation has been the same for many years now, and cautioned people to stay alert.
After investigating the CCTV footage from the area, the police have identified one of the assailants as Nonu, resident of Karim area. According to the police, he was involved in many criminal activities in past also. The police have launched a search operation to nab him.
Several residents of the area, who spoke to ETV Bharat after the incident said that such incidents were almost a daily occurrence in the area.
"We have seen many such incidents - be it mobile phone snatching, or chain snatching. Most of the incidents take place early in the morning. Yes, there are CCTV cameras installed. Even today, the police came here within five minutes," said Aslam, a local.
However, another local said that even though the police sometimes respond in time, the criminals manage to escape almost every single time.
"This happens a lot with common people. Delhi is not safe at all. Robbers are often armed with pistols, who can stand up to them?" he said.
The development comes amidst a spate of snatching incidents in the recent past in Delhi, which have raised a serious question mark over the safety of women in the city.
