Buddha has given answers to modern world problems: PM Modi inaugurates Global Buddhist Summit

The keynote speakers at the event will be Professor Robert Thurman, a leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism, and His Holiness Thich Tri Quang, the Deputy Patriarch of, Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that all modern world problems can be solved by Buddhist teaching. He was inaugurating the Global Buddhist Summit in the national capital.

Speaking about the relevance of Buddhism in the modern world he said that the path of Buddha is the path of the future and of sustainability. The world is suffering from war and unrest at present, Modi said adding that Buddha had given solutions to these problems centuries ago. Referring to conflicts prevailing all over the world, Modi said that India has not given ‘Yuddha’ to the world but ‘Buddha.'

The event kicked off at 10 am at Hotel Ashok in Delhi. The two-day Summit is being hosted by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with International Buddhist Confederation (IBC). It will have keynote speakers like Professor Robert Thurman, a Padma Shr recipient and the Deputy Patriarch of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Thich Tri Quang.

According to a statement released by the PMO, the Summit is an effort towards engaging the global Buddhist Dhamma leadership and scholars on matters of Buddhist and universal concerns and how to address them. It will also explore how the fundamental values of the Buddha Dhamma can provide inspiration and guidance in the contemporary world.

The Summit will witness the participation of eminent scholars, Sangha leaders and Dharma practitioners from all over the world, who will discuss pressing global issues and look for answers in the Buddha Dhamma that are based on universal values, the release said.

The discussions will be held under four themes: Buddha Dhamma and Peace; Buddha Dhamma: Environmental Crisis, Health and Sustainability; Preservation of Nalanda Buddhist Tradition; Buddha Dhamma Pilgrimage, Living Heritage and Buddha Relics: a resilient foundation to India's centuries-old cultural links to countries in South, South-East and East Asia.
