Tihar jail seeks new execution date for Nirbhaya convicts

Delhi's Tihar Jail authorities sought for a fresh date of execution as a mercy plea was filed by one of the convicts. The convicts were to be hanged at 7 am on January 22, in keeping with a verdict passed by a Delhi court last week.

New Delhi: Tihar Jail authorities on Thursday asked the Delhi government to issue the new execution date of the four Nirbhaya convicts as a mercy plea was filed by one of them.

Officials of Tihar, where the convicts have been kept, told a Delhi court that they have asked the state government for a new date of execution because of the mercy plea.

The convicts, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta, were to be hanged at 7 am on January 22, in keeping with a verdict passed by a Delhi court last week.
