Centre assures to reopen Cachar, Nagaon paper mills

Union minister Arvind Sawant assured to reopen Cachar and Nagaon paper mills in Assam. The delegation also handed over a memorandum to Sawant in which PPP module implementation of the private acquisition was mentioned for reviving these two paper mills.

New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday has assured a delegation from Assam to reopen the Cachar and Nagaon paper mills.

Union minister for heavy industries and public enterprises Arvind Sawant has assured the delegation that the ministry will try to revive the two prestigious paper mills in Assam.

The Assam delegation comprised Union minister Rameswar Tali, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika and eight other MPs representing the state.

The delegation also submitted a memorandum to Sawant mentioning PPP module implementation to revive these two paper mills.

"We strongly believe that the scope of making HPC a viable company still exists, if it is run by efficient professional management with proper modernization, technological upgradation, and financial restructuring," the delegation said.

The Cachar and Nagaon paper mills under Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) were established in 1978 and both started its commercial production from the late eighties.

The production of Jagiroad paper mill had stopped since 2015-16. The mill moved towards close down in March 2017 due to huge loss and lack of working capital.

Similarly, work of Cachar paper mill was suspended in October 2015. Workers of both the mills have not received salary for more than two years.
