Renowned mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh died at a hospital here on Thursday after a prolonged illness, his family members said. He was 74. Singh, who had been ailing for quite some time, died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). ETV Bharat pays tribute to this great mathematician who not only inspired India, but the world.

Patna: Vashishtha Narayan Singh, the great mathematician from Bihar, who challenged the theory of Einstein has passed away. He had been ill for the last several days.

The whole of Bihar is inconsolable with this news. A wave of mourning has spread after the news of his demise in the ancestral village Arrah.

Vashishtha Narayan Singh lived with his family in the Kulharia Complex in Patna.

Vashishtha Narayan Singh challenged Einstein's theory of relativity.

It is famous about him that when the 31 computers shut down for some time before the launch of Apollo at NASA, after the repair of computers, his calculations were the same as the computers.

Mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh was leading a life of oblivion in an apartment in Patna.

Vashistha Narayan Singh continued to write. Newspapers lying on the table, notebooks and sentences written in numerals and words on the walls of the room give evidence of this.

A few days before his death, a book, a copy and a pencil were his best friends.

Anonymity due to Schizophrenia

Born in a normal family of Basantpur village in Bhojpur district of Bihar, Vashishtha Narayan Singh earned a name abroad, but after suffering from mental illness schizophrenia, he started living in isolation.

Vashishtha Narayan Singh was born on 2 April 1942. Singh passed the matriculation examination in 1962 from Bihar.

While studying at Patna Science College, he met Professor Callie who came to Patna from America.

Impressed by his talent, Professor Callie invited him to come to Berkeley and do research.

The world believed his talent

There was a time when this great mathematician was an inspiration not only in India but also in a developed country like America.

His research on the cyclic vector macroeconomic theory became famous worldwide.

He also worked at NASA. It is said that when the 31 computers were shut down for some time before the launch of Apollo at NASA, the calculations of Vashishtha and the computers were the same once computers were repaired.

He would call out the teacher for teaching the wrong thing

He had broken all academic records during his studies.

In 1977, Narayan Singh succumbed to mental illness schizophrenia. It is said that when he was a student of Patna Science College, during that time he used to call out the mathematics teacher for teaching him wrong.

When the college principal came to know about this, he was asked to give a separate examination in which he broke all academic records.

His fame was worldwide

Vashishtha Narayan Singh went to the University of California for research in 1963.

In 1969, he received his PhD at the University of California. His research work made him famous in India and the world.

After finishing his studies he came to India for some time, but soon he went back to America.

He served as a professor of mathematics in Washington.

Singh returned to India in 1971. He then worked at IIT Kanpur and Indian Statistical Institute at Calcutta.

He married Vandana Rani in 1973.

Singh started having mental seizures in 1974. After this, he was treated in Ranchi. Then they disappeared for a long time and then suddenly came back.

In 1976, Vashistha Narayan developed schizophrenia, which caused many problems in his life.

In 2013, Vashistha Narayan Singh was invited as a visiting professor at Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University Madhepura.

Vashishtha Babu left but his rooms are still full of books and many math formulas written on the walls of his room.

At the moment, there is a wave of mourning all over Bihar regarding his death.
