Ahmedabad metropolitan court to hear defamation case against Bihar deputy CM

A defamation case filed against Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav will come up for hearing in the Ahmedabad metropolitan court on Saturday. Tejashwi Yadav was accused of calling Gujaratis "thugs". Later, Tejashwi had clarified that he did call all Gujaratis "thugs".

Patna: A defamation case filed against Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav will come up for hearing in the Ahmedabad metropolitan court on Saturday. Tejashwi Yadav was accused of calling Gujaratis "thugs" on March 22, 2023, while he was talking to reporters in Patna. Tejashwi made remarks against Gujaratis when the budget session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly was underway.

In the present scenario, only Gujaratis were thugs and they were forgiven. Diamond merchant Mehul Choksi is on the run after taking away money from the bank. Interpol has dropped the Red Corner notice against Choski, the Deputy CM had said at that time. However, Tejashwi had clarified that he did call all Gujaratis "thugs'.

Now, the matter will be taken up for hearing in the Ahmedabad metropolitan court today. In the previous hearing, the court had ordered an inquiry into the matter under Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The court after examining the complainant's petition, material evidence and others will decide whether it was a fit case for defamation or not. Haresh Mehta, who is the applicant in the defamation case, stated that he had heard Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav making a statement against Gujaratis. "Yadav was speaking to a private news channel. Being a Gujarati, I filed a defamation case against him for hurting the sentiments of people belonging to our community," said Mehta.

On March 21, a criminal defamation case was registered against Bihar deputy CM under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC. The first hearing in the case took place on May 1. The court had directed the complainant to present evidence and witnesses in the defamation case. The court may issue summons to Tejashwi Yadav after reviewing material evidence and others.
