Muzaffarpur: In an incident of suspected unrequited love, a man allegedly threw acid on a married woman and her family after she refused to elope with him, police said. All four sustained burn injuries and were admitted to the hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Search is on for the absconding accused, police said.
The incident took place in Bihar's East Champaran under Pipra police station area on Sunday night when the victim and her family were asleep. According to the police, the accused climbed to the roof of the house and slid the asbestos sheet from the top. Then, he poured acid on the sleeping family through the gap and locked the main door from outside so that the family could not reach out for help, police said. The accused absconded after the incident.
The neighbours rescued the family after hearing their screams. The woman, her husband and both children suffered burn injuries. They were brought from Motihari to Muzaffarpur hospital for treatment the next morning.
The victim woman said that the accused Mahesh Bhagat works as a tap water contractor while her husband was a laborer there. She had come in contact with Mahesh recently. She said that Mahesh used to ask her to go out with him. He wanted to marry her and asked her to elope with him.

"Then, one day he said that he had prepared fake marriage certificate and asked me to leave my family and go with him. He kept pressurising me. I had straightaway refused him saying I would never leave my husband and children. He then started threatening me. Finally, to take revenge on me, he threw acid on me, my husband, son and daughter," the victim said.
The victim said that Mahesh was extremely angry after she refused him and in a fit of rage attempted to kill her entire family. Police said investigations were on and the accused would be arrested soon.
