Goalpara: Surging waters from rivers in Meghalaya have inundated several villages in Assam's Goalpara district, on Monday.
Locals said that the gushing waters of the river breached the embankment leading to the inundation of the villages.
Residents here have been severely suffering due to the poor maintenance of Moinamoti embankment too.
In 2014, the embankment was breached but the government had allegedly not carried out any precautionary measures to save the lives of the people of the district.
On Sunday night, the embankment was breached once again forcing thousands of the people to leave their houses and take shelter in relief camps. The surging waters have also washed away people's houses, castles and destroyed the paddy fields as well.
"We have submitted several memorandums to the district administration and Assam government in this regard. However, nothing was done in the past to address the issue," a local complained said.
According to the data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Dispur, the number of districts affected by flood has reduced to 24 by the evening of 19th of July, 2020 and a total of 511 people have been evacuated.
