Tezpur: The Assam Forest Department has started the tiger census at the Kaziranga national park from Wednesday. Director of the national park, P Shivkumar said that the whole park had been divided into four zones to carry out the census.
Apart from forest guards of officials, NGO workers, peoples from citizens' groups and civilians were also engaged in the census.
According to the census carried out in 2011, there were a total of 118 tigers in the Kaziranga national park. It may be mentioned here that the number of tigers in the park has witnessed a sharp increase due to its forest cover.
The park authorities have spotted 123 tigers last year out of which 72 percent were adults and 28 percent were cubs.
