Cattle smuggling thriving near Indo-Bangladesh border

Assam's Dhubri district is witnessing an increase in cross-border cattle smuggling, with the police foiling multiple attempts at various places.

Golakganj: Using the COVID-19 lockdown as a shield, illegal cattle smugglers continued their activities near the porous Indo-Bangladesh border.

Police in Assam's Dhubri district, in the wee hours of Wednesday, foiled an attempt to smuggle cattle into Bangladesh through the border at Golakganj.

As soon as the Police spotted the group of illegal cattle suppliers, taking the animals towards the international border, they opened fire after which the smugglers jumped into the Gangadhar river and fled.

Police later rescued 42 cows along with some other materials used to smuggle the cattle.

In a separate incident, the Border Security Force (BSF) also foiled an attempt of the cattle smuggling and seized 150 cows from border outpost on the same day.

The seizure of illegally supplied cattle at two separate locations in the district on the same day has revealed that the cattle smuggling business is thriving at the border.
