In an exclusive interview to ETV Bharat, senior AGP leader and Assam cabinet minister Keshav Mahanta said that his party support the protest against CAB. "...We support the ongoing agitation," said Mahanta.

His statement assumes significance following the fact that this is for the first time an AGP leader spoke openly over the contentious Bill. Mahanta, however, said that they have told Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure that the indigenous people of Assam does not get affected with the Bill.

"The way other northeastern states have been kept out of the ambit of CAB, we have demanded the protection of the indigenous people of Assam," said the AGP leader. Sixth schedule areas and states with Inner Line Permit (ILP) system have been excluded from the ambit of the Bill. Also in major areas of Tripura CAB will not be implied. Interestingly, AGP is an ally of BJP in Assam and there are three cabinet ministers from AGP in the Sarbananda Sonowal led Assam Government.
