New Delhi: A delegation from Assam's Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence and raised their demand for the creation of an autonomous hill state.
"We have reiterated our demand for the creation of an autonomous hill state,it's a state within the state. We will not get separated from Assam, but we will have our government," said KAAC chief executive member (CEO) Tuliram Ronghang.
He said that the creation of a state within the state is possible under Article 244A of the Indian Constitution.
Ronghang said that demand for the creation of an autonomous hill state is a long pending demand.
"Prime Minister assured us that if BJP Government comes to power again, he will seriously look into the matter," said Ronghang.
The meeting between KAAC members and Prime Minister assumes significance especially ahead of the coming Lok Sabha election.
Assam Minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Hemanta Biswa Sharma also accompanied the Karbi delegation.
