Hyderabad: Assam is gearing up to witness the third and last phase of state Assembly polls on April 6.
A total of 79,19,641 voters including 39,07,963 females and 139 transgender will cast their vote at 11,401 polling stations in 40 constituencies situates in 11 districts across the state.
The voters will decide the fate of 337 candidates from 31 national and state political parties on Tuesday.
Out of 337 candidates, there are 25 females while 312 male candidates are trying their luck in this year's Assembly polls.
Out of 40 Assembly Constituencies, 54-Gauhati West constituency has a maximum number of candidates (15) while 48-Boko SC has a minimum number of candidates (3).
Out of the total candidates, 60 (18%) candidates have declared criminal cases while 45(13%) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Among the major political parties 14(58%) out of 24 candidates from INC have declared criminal cases while 13(54%) out of 24 have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
The assembly elections in Assam have been conducted in three phases on March 27, April 1, and April 6. A total of 264 candidates contesting in 47 assembly constituencies have tried their luck in the first phase on March 27th, 345 candidates contesting from 39 Constituencies have tried themselves in the second phase on April 1 while 337 candidates will try their luck in 40 constituencies during the third phase of polling.
Meanwhile this time the Assembly polls in Assam are being conducted with a different milieu by displaying the state's cultural legacy and value-added products of the local artists and artisans, besides setting up eco-friendly polling stations that have become a new attraction for the voters.
The election commission is taking all preventive measures to avoid direct contacts and to maintain the physical distance due to the Covid pandemic.
The number of voters for every booth has also been brought down to a maximum of 1,000. As a result, the number of polling booths has been augmented by 34.71 per cent to 33,530 from 24,890 in 2016.
In another first in Assam, the Election Commission has also arranged for voting through postal ballots for persons with disabilities, Covid-19 infected people and those above the age of 80 years.
The postal ballots were held two weeks before the polling began.
The result of Assam Assembly polls conducted for 126 Assembly constituencies will be declared on May 2.
