CAA protests: Over 1 lakh people hit streets in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh witnessed a large gathering of protesters at the Chowkidinghee Ground to voice their disagreement over the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). A number of local celebrities along with union leaders were present in the event to address the protest rally.

Dibrugarh (Assam): The town of Dibrugarh came to a halt, after more than a lakh gathered in a protest rally organised by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) against the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The protest witnessed a massive footfall at the "Janatar Gorjon" programme held in Chowkidinghee Ground.

The speakers who addressed the huge gathering were Dr Nagen Saikia, former president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, Gen Secy of AASU along with noted artists like Manash Robin, Lohit Gogoi and Neel Akash.

The speakers here vowed to carry on with the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act until scrapped.

Subsequently, Dibrugarh observed a spontaneous shutdown to express solidarity to AASU's anti-CAA "Janata Gorjon" programme despite no bandh call given by students' union.

All business establishments, schools, colleges and banking institutions remained closed during the day.

Intro:: Entire Dibrugarh town came to a standstill on Tuesday around one lakh people hit the streets to participate in the "Janatar Gorjon" programme organised at the Chowkidinghee playground by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The protest saw the attendance of over 90,000 people from all walks of life and from every community. Among those who addressed the mammoth gathering include ex-Asom Sahitya Sabha president Dr Nagen Saikia, AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, noted singers Manash Robin, Lohit Gogoi and Neel Akash. The speakers vowed to carry on with their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act until it was scrapped.
