Guwahati: The All Assam Lawyers' Association has demanded an increase in the number of Foreigners' Tribunal.

After the publication of the final NRC, about 19 lakh people have been excluded from the list.

Though, the timeline for appealing for inclusion in the NRC has been increased to 120 days and the number of Foreigners' Tribunal has also been increased to 300 from 100, it still seems to be very less considering a large number of people that have been excluded.

The Association has demanded the numbers to be increased to 500 Foreigners' Tribunal so that no deserving person is excluded from the list.

Lawyer Deepak Kumar Das said in the matter that: "There has already been a delay of four decades in the implementation of NRC which was one of the main reasons of the Assam Movement."

"If any indigenous person's name is excluded from NRC then the sacrifice of 855 martyrs would go in vain," he added.
