'Jail bharo' protest in Guntur against 'handcuffing' of farmers

Tension prevailed in Guntur as protesters stormed the district jail as part of their 'jail bharo' agitation against the handcuffing of protesting farmers in Andhra Pradesh.

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh): Tension prevailed in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district, as activists stormed the Guntur district jail as part of the 'Jail Bharo' protest organised against the 'handcuffing' of a few farmers recently.

Activists from the Joint Action Committee Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi stormed the Guntur district jail against the 'handcuffing' and detention of farmers who were protesting against the government.

Political parties like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Communist Party of India (India) also extended their support to the 'jail bharo' agitation.

Protesters lined the road leading up to the jail and chanted slogans in support of Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the police had already placed several JAC and political leaders under house arrest to foil the 'jail bharo' bid.

Further, hundreds of policemen cordoned off the Guntur district jail.

As the protesters arrived at the prison, police stopped them from entering the jail and even arrested several leaders.

Intense scuffles ensued as the protesters resisted the police action. Some women protesters were reportedly injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, Guntur Urban SP Ammireddy, claimed that the 'Jail Bharo' program was successfully foiled by the police. He said that around 150 protesters were arrested for disturbing law and order.

A case will be registered against those arrested and further action will be taken, the SP informed.
