Ghastly crime: Girl student stabbed to death in Guntur, police nab killer

In a shocking incident, a fourth-year B Tech student was stabbed to death in broad daylight by an unidentified assailant on Sunday in Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. The assailant attacked her with a knife after she refused his offer for a lift. She sustained six injuries to her throat and stomach. Some passers-by shifted the profusely bleeding girl to the Government General Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Guntur (Andhra Pradesh): In a shocking incident, a fourth-year B Tech student was stabbed to death in broad daylight by an unidentified assailant on Sunday in Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. The assailant attacked her with a knife after she refused his offer for a lift. She sustained six injuries to her throat and stomach. Some passers-by shifted the profusely bleeding girl to the Government General Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

An initial probe by the police revealed that the youth spoke to the victim for few minutes before attacking her. He also threatened people watching him not to come closer to him and escaped. Police identified the girl as Ramya studying fourth-year B Tech. Guntur Urban Superintendent of Police Arif Hafeez, who visited the hospital, said police registered a case and launched a manhunt for the assailant. He also collected information from the deceased girl's mother and brother. Police are suspecting someone close to her might have been involved in this attack.

The ghastly crime on Independence Day sparked outrage. State Home Minister M. Sucharita rushed to the Government General Hospital and condemned the murder. She said police had gathered a few clues and exuded confidence that the accused would be arrested in a day or two.

However, the Guntur Urban police cracked the case after investigating the CCTV footage and information obtained from the local people. He was nabbed from Pamidipadu in the Guntur district. When the police rounded him up, he tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrist but the police rushed him to Narasaraopet Government Hospital for first-aid and later shifted him to Govt General Hospital, Guntur.

DGP Gautam Sawang said that the incident was the most unfortunate and the accused will be punished according to the law. Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy ordered state police higher officials to conduct a detailed investigation into this incident and also announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family.

Meanwhile, TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu, BJP state chief Somu Veerraju and other leaders expressed their outrage over the incident. They demanded stringent action against the accused and provide government job to the family member of the victim.
