Melbourne: Andy Murray has been awarded a wildcard for the delayed Australian Open in February 2021, just two years after being on the brink of enforced retirement.

The 33-year-old thought his career was over but hip surgery has allowed the three-times Grand Slam winner to prolong his time on the tennis circuit.

At 122 in the world, Murray is ranked too low to gain direct entry into the tournament, which has been delayed because of coronavirus.

The pandemic and a lingering pelvic injury has restricted Murray to just seven official matches this year.
