Asian Games: Harmilan Bains claims silver in women’s 1500m event

Hangzhou: India’s athlete Harmilan Bains won silver in the women’s 1500m race in the men’s 1500m at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday.

Harmilan Bains finished the race in 4:12.74 seconds only behind Winfred Mutile Yavi from Bahrain who secured the top time with 4:11:65s securing the gold medal in her name.

Harmilan's father Amandeep Bains was an Asian Games medallist in 1500m and was a national-level runner and represented India in middle distance running events whereas her mother Madhuri Saxena 2002 Asian Games silver medallist in 800m.

She grabbed the injury in the year 2017 and dealt with it for a year. But the injury came back to haunt her in 2021. After six months of struggling to understand the kind of injury she was suffering from, it was then determined that she had knee plica syndrome for which she had to undergo surgery which put her out of action for another 10 months. Hence, achieving this feat must be an extremely proud moment for her.

She will be back in action, competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics as she hopes to take her game a step to another level as well and win a medal for India.

India is now at rank 4 in the medal tally with 53 medals comprising 13 gold, 21 silver, and 19 bronze.
