Ipoh: India beat Asian Games champion Japan 2-0 in the opening match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup here. India convincingly defeated Japan even when most of its seasoned players were out of the squad due to injury.

On the 24th minute, India scored its first goal. Varun Kumar converted a penalty corner into a goal and Simrajeet Singh helped India double its lead by smashing one in the net on the 56th minute.

India will play its second match against South Korea on Sunday.
