Kolkata: Star Indian Pacer Mohammed Shami has to go through a lot of trouble in last one year both on and off the field, but the Kings XI Punjab bowler battled them and emerged stronger. Shami started his career as T20I specialist bowlers and now he is Indian skipper Virat Kohli's go-to man in all formats of the game.
Last year, Shami scalped 47 wickets in 12 Test matches and 14 wickets in 7 ODIs down under against New Zealand and Australia. In the ongoing 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), Shami is playing for Kings XI Punjab. Speaking to a newspaper, Shami opened up about his workload management and what makes the Indian pace attack a feared unit in world cricket.
When Shami was asked about his fitness, he said, "Not too long ago, I weighed about 93 kg. Today, I have reduced by around 20 kg. The emphasis was primarily on becoming a better bowler and fitness was a crucial element. I have changed my fitness routine and diet habits. At the moment, I am at my fittest best. However, there is always scope for improvement — be it in bowling or with regards to fitness."
Shami further said, "I was a regular in Tests and bowling with the red ball always brought the best out of me. That requires a different skill set altogether. However, after the 2015 World Cup, I didn’t play a game for almost two years due to an (knee) injury. I wanted to regain my confidence at that point of time, and began working both on my bowling as well as on fitness. I always emphasize on one thing —which is to do my best in whatever situation I am given the ball."
When Shami was asked about workload management for those who will feature in the World Cup, the KXIP cricketer said, "As players, we abide by what the BCCI says as they know what’s best for us. As far as managing workload goes, even if you are not playing a game you would still be training. Players are well aware of what’s expected of them and will work accordingly to stay fresh for the World Cup."
