Here's what happened in the match:

Nagpur: India thrashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs inside three days in the opening Test to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series here on Saturday. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (5/37) returned with a five wicket haul as India shot off Australia for 91 in 32.3 overs in their second innings just before tea.

Australia conceded a massive first innings lead of 223. This was Australia's second lowest total against India after 93 in Mumbai (2004). Bowling a probing length, Ashwin ran through the Australian top order and annexed his 31st fifer in just his 10th over, before Ravindra Jadeja (2/34), Mohammed Shami (2/13) and Axar Patel (1/6) completed the formalities.

Earlier, Patel hit a career-best 84 (174 balls; 10x4s, 1x6) in an entertaining 52-run ninth wicket partnership with Shami who was at his aggressive best in his 37 from 47 balls (2x4s, 3x6s). In reply to Australia's 177, India were bowled out for 400 at lunch on a turning Jamtha wicket.

The left-handed Patel, who was overnight 52, looked calm and was in control to give India a solid batting depth at No 9. For Australia, debutant off-spinner Tod Murphy was the pick of of their attack to return with impressive figures of 47-12-124-7.

Brief Scores:

Australia 1st innings: 177 and 2nd innings: 91 all out in 32.3 overs (Ravichandran Ashwin 5/37).

India 1st innings: 400 all out in 139.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 120, Axar Patel 84, Ravindra Jadeja 70; Todd Murphy 7/124). India win by an innings and 132 runs. (Inputs from PTI)

  • Just when it seemed like India had won the Test match when Ravindra Jadeja's deliver sneaked in through Steve Smith's bat and pad, the umpire declared the delivery a no ball. Although it's just a matter of time for India now to register the first victory of the series.
  • The Australian team continues to stuggle having lost Matt Renshaw (2), Peter Handscomb (6) and Alex Carey (10) in quick succession. R Ashwin picked all of them. Steve Smith and skipper Cummins are at the crease.
  • Australia loses David Warner. An angled-in delivery by R Ashwin that directly struck on Warner's pads. He was adjudged lbw after scoring 10 runs which brought their best batter, Steve Smith, to the crease. Smith and Renshaw are at the crease.
  • Labuschange is gone. Ravindra Jadeja takes his wicket.
  • India have started on a brilliant note as the first scalp came in early with the wicket of Usman Khawaja (5), who was caught by Virat Kohli and bowled by R Ashwin. David Warner and Marnus Labuschange are on the crease at the moment and dealing with the web of Indian spinners, who are on top with Ashwin's variations and Axar's accuracy.

Match summary:

Nagpur: Axar Patel hit a resolute 84 while Mohammed Shami smashed an entertaining 37 as India took a massive 223-run first innings lead by posting 400 against Australia on the third day of the opening Test, here Saturday. Axar put his head down and let Shami attack in the 52-run ninth-wicket stand, helping India outbat Australia on a track which the visiting media alleged was "doctored".

India had resumed the day at 321 for seven with Ravindra Jadeja (70) and Patel at the crease. Jadeja did not last long as he shouldered arms to a Murphy delivery that was fired in from an angle and crashed on to the stumps. The pitch hasn't changed its character much and it remains a slow turner where any batter ready to grind it out will get results. Lunch was taken when Indian innings ended. Shami, who was dropped on 6 by Scott Boland at long-on off Nathan Lyon, decided to launch a swift counter-attack on opposition best bowler Todd Murphy (7/124).

He hit the bespectacled off-spinner for three sixes -- a slog sweep over mid-wicket, a flat six over long-off and monstrous hit over long-on -- apart from a couple of boundaries during his 47 ball stay. Adding 50-plus runs in just over an hour (65 minutes) was laudable and Patel on his part gave Shami bulk of the strike.

If Australia had any chance of wrapping it up, Boland's goof up proved costly as Shami made them pay dearly. While Murphy has been impressive on debut, Lyon's (1/126) performance has been disappointing to say the least as his bowling lacked the bite.

Almost all the Indian batters found it easy to defend the veteran off-spinner off the back-foot. Once Shami was dismissed going for his fourth maximum off Murphy, Patel decided to attack and lofted the debutant straight into the sightscreen for his first six. His and India's innings ended when he was bowled by rival skipper Pat Cummins.

Brief Scores:

Australia 1st innings: 177 all out in 63.5 overs.

India 1st innings: 400 all out in 139.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 120, Axar Patel 84, Ravindra Jadeja 70; Todd Murphy 7/124).

  • Axar Patel scored 84, just 16 shy of what could have been a well-deserved hundred. Australia folds India up at 400.
  • Axar Patel is batting well, respecting spinners and bringing forth the attack whenever required. Shami has scored 7 runs so far -- a useful contributing given the context of the game as it will only add to the lead that India already has.
  • Ravindra Jadeja got dismissed by Murphy, who took sixth wicket of India's innings. Jadeja scored 70.

Earlier Yesterday

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel extended India's lead to 144 runs after Rohit Sharma scored a century as the hosts ended day two of the opening Test against Australia at 321 for seven here on Friday. Despite wickets tumbling at regular intervals at the other end, Rohit (120 off 212 balls) batted with composure to bring up a hard-fought century, his ninth in the format.

However, the Indian skipper became his Australian counterpart's first victim as a Pat Cummins delivery sent Rohit's off stump cartwheeling. All-rounders Jadeja (66 not out) and Axar (52 not out) then combined forces, scoring unbeaten fifties, to put India in a strong position.

Off-spinner Todd Murphy (5/82) continued to impress in his debut game as he picked up four wickets on Friday, including the scalps of Virat Kohli (12) and Cheteshwar Pujara (7).
