Mahela Jayawardene reacts on Sanath Jayasuriya's two-year ban

Hyderabad: Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has asked Sanath Jayasuriya to cooperate with ICC after the 49-year-old on Tuesday was banned for two years after admitting to obstruct an anti-corruption probe.

Jayawardene, who led Sri Lanka to the final of the ICC World Cup in 2007, on Tuesday twitted, "Its a sad day for SL cricket to see one of their favorite sons getting a two year suspension from @ICC. why not cooperate? If any one loves the beutiful game in our country should expose the curupted so we protect the next genaration. #Values"

Earlier, Jayasuriya admitted to the charges of having destroyed the evidence as claimed by the ICC. When asked why he admitted to the charges he said, "I accepted the charges for the greater good and to protect the integrity of cricket."

The left-hand batsman also called the ICC’s decision to penalise him as “unfortunate” and claimed that the international body has no evidence of “corruption, betting or misuse of inside information” against him.

According to an ICC release, "Mr Jayasuriya, the former Sri Lanka Cricket Chair of Selectors, admitted to being in breach of the following provisions of the Code:

1. Article 2.4.6 - Failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU, including failure to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the ACU as part of such investigation.

2. Article 2.4.7 - Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.

The talisman batman has played 110 Tests, 445 ODIs and 31 T20Is. He has smashed 42 international tons and has scored over 21,000 runs.
