Mumbai: The 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia is all set to be postponed. It will not take place in scheduled time - October-November. ICC is expected to make an official announcement next week, a report carried by a national daily claimed.
In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, which brought all sports activities across the world to a standstill, cricket administrators, who especially look after the international cricket affairs at the ICC, and the hosts Cricket Australia, are looking for an alternative window to host the T20 World Cup.
Cricket Australia could look for a February-March window. However, the WT20 just before the IPL may overkill the passion for cricket. This may also put India's tour of England in risk. So the broadcaster Star Sports, who holds rights for ICC events as well as India's bilateral calendar, is unlikely to agree for this window.
The next option will be BCCI allows CA to host the 2021 edition of the WT20 and in turn host the 2022 edition. But India is unlikely to give up a lucrative tournament like WT20, which will help BCCI earn millions.
The last option will be Australia host the 2022 WT20. It may work as there is no ICC event scheduled in that year.
It is expected that the decision regarding the postponement of 2020 WT20 will be taken anytime between May 26 and 28 when member boards of the ICC participate in a teleconference.
